The IE-SMU MBA is a general management programme. We do not offer electives. All modules form part of the core curriculum and are therefore compulsory.
The programme will be taught by experienced SMU and IE faculty. Information about some of the contributing faculty members can be found under the Faculty section of this website.
Blended learning combines the best of both worlds by complementing face‐to‐face periods with online learning. It allows exceptional professionals at a pinnacle moment in their career to continue their lifelong learning experience without putting on hold their professional activities for a prolonged period of time.
Eminently practical, we implement the same methodology used in full-time programmes through case method and group teamwork. Diverse topics are studied via the use of real-life case studies and company projects, debates in the online forums and videoconferences. Thanks to innovative use of new technologies, which allow us to replicate face-to-face teaching techniques, students are able to enjoy the same experience they would have in a traditional classroom.
During the online period of study, students are continually connected with their peers through synchronous and/or asynchronous interactive learning sessions which reflect the way companies operate in today’s global environment.
Yes. However, the pre-study is done at your own pace. We will provide materials as well as tutorial support that you can use at your own discretion.
The very nature of the Blended methodology facilitates networking. In today’s world, all students (face‐to‐face or online) use tools such as Twitter, Skype, Facebook, e-mail or LinkedIn on a daily basis. The Online Campus reflects this intercommunication in a more structured and organized way, which allows for much deeper content. The programme itself is based on daily interaction between students, whether it is through group work, forums, projects or activities, and is mandatory that students participate on a regular basis. This steady communication between classmates is complemented by the face-to-face periods of the programme.
Yes, much of the assessment will be based on class participation which will make class attendance important.
Students of the IE-SMU MBA programme are generally busy professionals and do not have sufficient time to complete a study abroad experience during the programme. However, should a candidate wish to pursue a study abroad experience, both institutions will work with the candidate to find an appropriate opportunity if it is available.
Yes, our career services provide self-assessment guides and career coaching with the purpose of improving a participant’s overall job performance and long term career goals.
On average, students spend between 20 to 25 hours a week studying, including time spent working on the forums as well as in videoconferences.
Upon completion of the IE-SMU MBA, the degree awarded is a Master of Business Administration jointly issued by IE Business School and SMU.
Individuals must hold a university degree and have a minimum of 3 years’ full-time working experience to apply for the programme. The GMAT or GRE test, or equivalent SMU or IE admissions test, is a compulsory requirement for admission. Above all, candidates must demonstrate that they have the commitment, experience, motivation and potential to benefit from and contribute to the programme.
No, we admit students from all backgrounds and work experience and seek diversity to enhance the programme experience.
We expect applicants to have a strong undergraduate degree. However, we look at many other aspects of your application such as drive and motivation.
You can send us your application prior to taking the tests. However, admissions decisions will not be made until the test scores are received.
We do not set a limit on the number of times you can sit the GMAT/GRE. You are the best judge as to whether you can significantly improve upon your last score. We will ask you to report all your past scores and we will consider the highest score for your application.
These exams can be taken by the candidate only once. The score each candidate receives is sent directly to IE Business School and SMU.
All non‐native speakers should submit a TOEFL or IELTS test score, with the exception of the following:
- Candidates who have completed their University Degree in English, demonstrating courses taught in English and academic transcripts.
- Candidates who have over 2 continuous years of work experience in an English speaking country.
We will inform you as to whether you have been selected for an interview within two weeks of receiving your online application. If you are based outside Singapore or Madrid, the interview will most likely be conducted via Skype. Otherwise, it will be a face-to-face interview on SMU’s or IE’s campus.
You can reapply to the IE-SMU MBA programme with a minimum wait period of 12 months between application and re-application. Re-applicants should send the MBA office one re-applicant essay and one additional letter of recommendation.
Required re-applicant essay: Please describe your career progress since you last applied and ways in which you have enhanced your candidacy (500 words).
IE-SMU keep applications on file for 2 years, so individuals who reapply within this time period do not need to resubmit transcripts or standardized test scores (GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.) unless there has been a change to these components.
The tuition fee will be paid in 4 instalments: 10% to confirm your place at admission, 30% before the start of the programme, 30% before the start of the second academic period and 30% before the start of the third and final academic period.
Programme offers a number of scholarships and loans.
Scholarships: Students can apply for scholarships upon admission to the Programme. Scholarships cover up to 30% of the total tuition fee. There are no bonds attached to the scholarships. Scholarships are available in the following categories: Leadership, Community Impact, Entrepreneurship, Diversity, and Academic Excellence. For enquiries, please contact us.

Yes, attendance at the face-to-face periods is mandatory, as it is crucial to guarantee the success of the programme and fulfilment of degree requirements.
The IE-SMU MBA application process requires an admissions test for all candidates (regardless of age) as it gives us a base to compare candidates from different backgrounds and to ensure that each of our students can manage the academic rigour of the programme. The admission exam can be either IE or SMU’s admissions tests or the GMAT or GRE. If you decide on the IE or SMU admissions test, the exams will require no prior preparation since they determine participants’ ability to process information and think strategically, rather than repeat previously studied patterns or equations. If you would rather submit the GMAT/GRE, we consider GMAT scores above 600 to be competitive.
